Description
The garden walls surrounding Kirby Knowle Castle were likely built in the 17th century, with later rebuildings and additions from the 19th and 20th centuries. They are constructed from coursed squared stone and feature chamfered coping, varying in height.
To the north of the house, the wall rises on either side of a wide entranceway. This entrance has a moulded quoined surround with a shallow Tudor-arched head, sunk spandrels, a carved roundel on the monolithic lintel, and added ball finials. The wall ends at the west with a later pier that has a chamfered top and a ball and cushion finial. At the east end, the wall turns south towards the house, featuring a later wide archway, and runs parallel to the north front of the house at a low height.
At another angle pier, the wall turns south again, leading to an entrance flanked by ashlar piers with chamfered bases and caps that support obelisk finials. From this point, the wall returns east towards the house, stepping up at the house end, and continues southwards, ramping down with a doorway to enclose a garden to the south of the house, where the southern wall is embattled.
