Description
The remains of castle walls located to the south and west of Upsall Castle are likely from the 14th century. The walls are constructed of sandstone rubble and stand up to 15 feet high. There are remnants of a circular tower on the west side and the southeast corner tower, which features traces of chamfered elliptical-arched openings. A mason's mark can be found on the south wall. The castle was probably initiated by Geoffrey Scrope, who acquired the manor from the Upsalls in 1327. It is believed to have been demolished during the Civil War and was in ruins by 1660.
