Description

Post Office Cottage and Middle Cottage are two dwellings that were originally one house, built in the mid to late 18th century, with additions and alterations from the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed from coursed squared stone with a herringbone-tooled finish, while the later part has a random nibble texture. It features pantile roofs and has a lobby-entry plan, standing two storeys tall with four bays. A 19th-century bay was added to the right, which, along with the fourth bay, now forms Post Office Cottage. There is also a 20th-century single-storey addition to the far right that is not of special interest.

The main range has a central part-glazed door from the 20th century with a herringbone-tooled lintel above it. There are two windows on each floor flanking the door, featuring stone lintels and cills. The first three bays have 12-pane side-sliding sash windows, while the fourth bay has 20th-century casements, and the first-floor window opening has been widened. The added bay includes a half-glazed 20th-century door with a stone lintel and a 20th-century casement window in a widened opening above.

The building has shaped kneelers and ashlar coping. At the right end of the original house, there is a corniced stone stack that has been heightened with white brick in the 20th century, along with a rebuilt central ridge stack. The rear of the building features a flat-roofed 20th-century extension on the right, which is not of interest. There are small, square, central lights on the first floor and another at the eaves on the left side. The interior of Middle Cottage has not been inspected but is reported to retain original central back-to-back fireplaces. Post Office Cottage previously served as a Post Office.
