Description
Rockery Cottage, Crab Cottage, Broom House, Winston House, and Valley View are a row of cottages located on the south side of Lythe Valley Road in Sandsend. Rockery Cottage and Crab Cottage date from the 18th century, while Broom House, Winston House, and Valley View were built in the early to mid-19th century, all sharing a similar architectural style. The cottages are constructed from coursed squared stone and feature high-pitched pantiled roofs. Most of the brick chimneys have been rebuilt.
These cottages are 1½ storeys tall, with upper windows set beneath small gables that break the eaves, supported by copings resting on footstones. The older houses have splayed jambs and lintels, with Yorkshire sash windows. The entrances consist of 6-panel doors topped with glazed panels in similar surrounds. The row comprises five bays in total, with a single-storey, two-window extension to Rockery Cottage. Broom House and Winston House have six bays, and their windows are also Yorkshire sashes, featuring four-panel doors with oblong fanlights.
Valley View is primarily built of brick, except for its north return gable. It faces west and is three bays wide, standing at 2½ storeys with three gables that break the eaves. This cottage has 20th-century windows and a four-panel central door within a recent porch. Valley View is included in the listing because it is integral to the rest of the terrace.
