Description
Birkin House is a house dating from the mid to late 18th century. It is constructed of pinkish-brown brick with red brick dressings and features a stone slate roof. The building has a central entrance hall plan and stands three storeys high with five bays. The central entrance includes a six-fielded-panel door with an overlight, set in a surround with straight tooling beneath a pediment supported by consoles. The ground and first floor windows are sash windows with glazing bars, while the second floor features six-pane sashes, all with stone sills and set under flat arches made of gauged brick. The roof is hipped with ridge stacks, and there are some 16-pane sashes under cambered heads on the returns.
Inside, there is an open well staircase that is said to have 18th-century turned balusters, although it is now covered. Some windows have shutters, and there is a panelled room to the left. There is an adjoining single-storey range to the right that is not of special interest.
