Description
Spital House Farmhouse is an early 18th-century farmhouse that has been raised, altered, and extended, likely in the early 19th century, with a 20th-century extension at the rear. The building is constructed of sandstone and chalk, which is whitewashed, while the extensions are made of red brick, some of which is also whitewashed. It features a pantile roof with brick stacks and is one storey with an attic, presenting a two-window front and an unaligned one-window extension on the left side. There are one-storey outbuildings at each end of the farmhouse.
The main entrance is located centre right and consists of a half-glazed door. The ground floor has two-light, 16-pane horizontal-sliding sash windows, while the attic features two-light, 4-pane horizontal-sliding sash raking dormers. All windows have painted stone sills and painted wedge lintels above the ground floor openings. The left outbuilding contains a two-light, 4-pane horizontal-sliding sash window with a painted timber lintel. A ramped-up parapet conceals a pent roof, and the pent outbuilding on the right has no front opening. There are stacks at the right end and left of centre.
At the rear, a 20th-century porch has been added to the extension. Inside the main house, the exposed joists are square in section, and there are raised and fielded panels in the window recess to the right of the door. A plank and stud partition wall is located to the left of the door, and there is a cupboard door with butterfly hinges at the rear of the entrance passage. The extension features a folding plank rear door, chamfered joists, and H-L hinges on the doors. The 20th-century rear porch is not of special interest.
