SE 75 NW BUTTERCRAMBE MAIN STREET WITH BOSSALL (south side, off) Buttercrambe 6/5 (1/3) Church of St John the Evangelist 29 1 53 - II*

Church. C13 and C15, much rebuilt 1878-81. Sandstone and limestone ashlar, Westmorland slate roof. 3 1/2-bay nave and 2-bay chancel at slight angle. West front: pointed doorway beneath flat hood-mould. 2 single-light trefoil-headed windows above. Nave windows in Perpendicular style. 3 1/2 bays of blocked C13 arcade in south wall. Blocked C15 door visible within blocking of arcade. Chancel: round-headed door of c1200 to north. First bay: ogee-headed single-light windows. Second bay: 2-light Perpendicular windows, that to the north being C19 replacement. East end: C19 3-light window in Perpendicular style. Bellcote with pyramidal roof between nave and chancel. Interior: wall monuments include tablet to Dorothea Darley, died 1674. Slate tablet in chalk surround flanked by Corinthian columns supporting broken pediment with achievement. Memorial to Richard Darley, died 1706, and 2 sons: plaque flanked by putti on shelf carrying 3 busts, with drapery surrounds. Pevsner, Yorkshire: The North Riding, 1966.
