Description
Tofta House is a farmhouse dating to the late 16th and early 17th centuries, with later alterations. It is constructed of rubble, with Welsh slate roofs. The building follows a T-shaped plan, featuring a central rear range. Originally three storeys, it now has two. The front elevation has four bays. Much of the first two bays are built with ashlar stones taken from Ravensworth Castle, which are coursed rubble. Quoins are present. A 20th-century part-glazed six-panel door is set within an ashlar surround in the second bay. Sash windows with glazing bars are visible, featuring projecting sills and deep stone lintels. To the left and right of the ground-floor window in the first bay, there are partially visible surrounds of earlier mullion windows. Shaped kneelers and moulded ashlar coping further adorn the exterior. Stacks are located at both ends and between the second and third bays. The left-end stack is corniced, the other two have brickwork at the top, and the right-end stack is partially external. The rear of the rear wing incorporates quoins, shaped kneelers, a moulded coping, and a gable stack. The left return of the rear wing has a blocked two-light chamfered mullion window on the second floor. The left return is mainly constructed of reused medieval ashlar, with ground- and first-floor fire windows featuring blocked ashlar surrounds. The right return has a blocked chamfered first-floor window to the right of the stack, and a shuttered loft opening to the left of the stack.
