Description

The farm buildings at Moulton Hall Farm, built around 1850, consist of a barn, calf-house, and loose-boxes. They are constructed from rubble with ashlar dressings and feature pantile and corrugated sheet roofs. The layout is U-shaped, with a two-storey, six-bay barn range on the west side, single-storey loose-box ranges at each end, and a separate two-storey, five-bay calf-house in the center.

The west elevation of the barn showcases quoins and has two pointed-arched quoined openings for the threshing barn, along with blocked vents. The granary at the south end of this range includes two lower matching doorways and three paired windows on the first floor. The roof, which was originally stone slated, is now covered with corrugated sheets and features a louvred ventilator at the north end, where a threshing machine powered by an external steam engine was located.

On the east elevation of the calf-house, there are quoins with chamfered quoined doorways to the left and right, leading to a stable and board doors respectively. The center has two square chamfered window openings. The first floor contains a hayloft with two single-light quoined openings that were formerly latticed, a central latticed keyed oculus, a triangular pigeoncote, and two additional single-light quoined openings. The calf-house has a hipped pantile roof.

The loose-boxes feature six quoined doorways on the inner returns. Inside, there are king-post roof trusses. These farm buildings were designed using modern principles and included tram-lines in the yard for transporting feed, manure, and other materials. They were constructed by the Sanderson family of Moulton Hall, reportedly using materials from demolished buildings nearby. This group of farm buildings is considered one of the most impressive in the area.
