Description

Sun Cottage, formerly known as Joiners Shop, is a medieval chapel that has been converted into a house. It is possibly from the 13th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of rubble and has a 20th-century pantile roof. It is a single storey structure with approximately three bays and features quoins. All external openings date from the 20th century.

Inside, there are four medieval roof trusses, three of which are exposed, featuring angled principals with arched collars supported on corbels. In the east wall, to the right of a 20th-century fireplace, there is a piscina that has been moved from its traditional position in the southeast corner. This piscina has a triangular hood carved from a single piece of stone, believed to be of French origin. The west doorway now leads to a bathroom.

The chapel is identified as a small cell established in Moulton in the 13th century, associated with the French Abbey of Bagard, which was highly regarded by the Earl of Richmond. Despite the dissolution of English properties of alien priories by the Crown in 1414, the chapel continued to be used for services into the early 15th century and likely remained in use until the Reformation. It was recorded as granted by the Crown in 1586 to John Awbrey and John Radcliffe, and it was used as a carpenter's shop in the late 19th century.
