Description
The gate piers to the Manor House date from the mid to late 17th century and were built for the Smithson family. They are made of ashlar sandstone and feature square piers with banded rustication. The capitals include torus architraves, scotia friezes, and classical cornices. Each pier is topped with a ball finial that rests on shafts supported by four ogee volutes. These gate piers are depicted in an early 18th-century drawing of Moulton Manor found in Samuel Buck's Yorkshire Sketchbook, indicating that they have been relocated to their current position to the north-east of the house.
