Description
This is a group of six chest tombs belonging to the Hartley family, located to the west and south of the tower of the Church of Saint Michael. They date from the late 18th century to the early 19th century and are made of sandstone ashlar. Two of the tombs feature acanthus rosettes and are flanked by fluted pilasters at the ends, while the others are plain. These six chest tombs create a prominent group and commemorate members of an important local family known for building East Hall and Middleton Lodge.
