Description

This is a house dating from 1860, designed by William Butterfield for Viscount Downe of Baldersby Park. It is constructed of red brick in English bond, with ashlar bands and window surrounds, blue brick detailing, and a 20th-century tile roof. The building is square and represents the High Victorian style. It has two storeys and an irregular arrangement of windows. The front features a recessed bay on the left with a porch displaying a Gothic arch constructed of blue headers and ashlar, and containing an original half-glazed panelled door. To the right of the porch are two ground floor windows, each originally of two lights but with the mullions removed. Above, on the first floor to the right, is a three-light window with sashes, rising as a half-hipped dormer. All the window frames appear to be 20th century replacements. The main chimney is located on the ridge and is stepped, featuring tumbled-in brickwork. The property was formerly the Estate Agent’s house.
