Description
No. 47 Newbiggin is a 18th-century house with two storeys, constructed from coursed stone and topped with a modern pantile roof. The building features five windows, with the central portion slightly projecting forward beneath a pediment. It has chamfered quoins at the corners and a moulded stone eaves cornice. The central window on the first floor is round-headed, complete with a moulded dripstone and intersecting glazing bars. The flanking windows are pointed-arched, also with dripstones, and the blind tympana above them are painted to resemble the central window's glazing bars. The elevation displays Gothic details throughout.
On the ground floor, the windows are designed as angled bays under shaped roofs, each containing five lights with cusped heads, decorative spandrels, and clustered column mullions. The interiors of these bays are vaulted and feature ornamental ribs. The central entrance is framed by a moulded stone doorcase, adorned with nail head ornamentation that matches the cornices of the bay windows.
To either side of the main house, there are one-window wings. The left-hand wing has a stone surround for its window, which lacks glazing bars, and its ground floor is rendered. It also features a moulded string course. The right-hand wing is rendered as well, with a string course above a plain door and a window that has thick glazing bars and a plain stone frame.
Nos. 35 to 59 (odd) form a group with this property.
