Description
Camblesforth Hall is a house dating from around 1700, which has been converted into two dwellings with some later additions and alterations, including a single-storey range at the rear that is of no special interest. It is likely designed by John Etty of York. The building is constructed of reddish-brown brick in English bond, featuring ashlar dressings and a slate roof.
The house has two storeys and attics, with seven bays that project slightly. It has a plinth with moulded ashlar coping and quoins. The central entrance features a six-fielded-panel door set within a moulded architrave, adorned with a frieze of floral scrolls and consoles that support a broken pediment with a plinth for a bust. The ground and first floors have eighteen-pane sash windows beneath flat arches made of gauged brick. The eaves overhang and are supported by modillions. The pedimented roof dormers contain twelve-pane Yorkshire sashes, and there are ridge stacks atop a hipped roof with a central well. At the rear, there is a 35-pane unequally-hung sash window with radial glazing at the head, set under a round brick arch with an ashlar keystone and imposts. On the east facade, there is an eight-panel door within a Gibbs surround, featuring a devil mask keystone.
Inside, there are substantial remains of the original interior, including a dogleg staircase with a vase-on-ball balustrade and large ball finials on the newel posts, as well as first- and second-floor flights of a similar service staircase. Moulded panelling, ceilings, and fireplaces are preserved in most rooms, along with panelled doors, some of which have shouldered architraves. The interior has not been fully inspected.
