Description
The Church of St Mary is a Roman Catholic church built in 1842, designed by the architectural firm Hadfield of Weightman & Hadfield from Sheffield. The construction was carried out by Mr. Wm Bradley of Selby for the stone and brickwork, and Mr. Bairstow of Selby for the woodwork. The church features a nave with a south porch, a chancel, and a north vestry. It is constructed of white brick with ashlar dressings and has slate roofs with coped ashlar gables, moulded kneelers, and cross finials. The building includes a chamfered plinth and cill band, as well as a moulded eaves band.
At the west end, there is a three-light pointed arch window with panel tracery. A square projecting bellcote with a small pointed arch and a gabled top is located at the right corner. The north side of the nave has three two-light pointed arch windows with panel tracery, while the south side has three similar windows, along with a projecting gabled porch that features a pointed arch doorway and a trefoil window above it. The chancel has a single three-light pointed arch window with panel tracery on the south side and a larger similar window on the east side, which includes a canopied niche above it. The north chancel features a projecting vestry with a tall gable stack and a flat-headed two-light window.
Inside, the church has a single hammer beam roof in the nave and a cross-braced roof in the chancel. There is a west gallery with a Gothic balustrade supported by a single iron column. The interior fittings include original pews, an altar, a reredos, and a rood cross, along with a later brass altar rail and elaborate side altars flanking the chancel arch.
