Description
Kirkbridge Mill is a mid- to late-18th century house and watermill, with 19th-century alterations. It is constructed of red brick and coursed squared stone, with ashlar dressings, pantile and graduated stone slate roofs. The mill house is brick, built in the late 18th century, and is two storeys high with a symmetrical three-bay elevation to the right and two wider bays to the left. The fourth bay features a six-panel door with an overlight, beneath a stone lintel, and a blocked segmental arched doorcase is located to the far left. All windows are late 19th-century four-pane sashes with stone sills and lintels, with three to the ground floor and five above. A dentilled cornice runs along the top. The roof has a lower pitch of graduated stone slates and the remainder is covered in pantiles. A ridge stack and end stack are present on the right side. The mill itself is of coursed squared stone, dating from the early to mid-18th century. It is two storeys high, with an L-plan layout, three bays by four bays. The central bay has a casement window in what was formerly a doorway, featuring a flush quoined surround with a double keystone; it is flanked by twelve-pane casements. A board door is located to the right. On the first floor, a four-pane casement is to the left, and a twelve-pane casement to the right. The roof is hipped to the left. The left return side has two doors and an opening between them, which houses a large cast-iron water wheel. Further 19th-century mill machinery remains in situ. The first floor of the left return contains a board door and three fixed-pane windows. A moulded stone cornice runs along the top. The roof is covered in pantiles.
