Description

The Church of St John the Evangelist is a Roman Catholic church built between 1830 and 1833 by architect J A Hansom, with alterations made in 1870 by Hadfield & Sons of Sheffield. It is constructed of ashlar stone with ashlar dressings and features a slate roof. The church has raised coped gables with kneelers and a plinth.

This single cell church is designed in the Gothic Revival style and includes a western porch. The west front features a projecting single-storey porch with buttresses and a raised coped gable topped with a cross finial. The central doorway is pointed arch with double plank doors set in a chamfered surround, complete with a hood mould. Behind the porch, there are three tall lancets framed by round columns and double chamfered arches. Above this is a gabled bellcote that contains a pointed arch and a bell. The corners of the church are accented with diagonal buttresses that have set-offs. On either side of the west front, there are five tall lancets in chamfered openings, with buttresses between them; however, the two eastern bays on the south side are obscured by a later brick lean-to.

Inside, the church features a panelled wooden roof, a wooden west gallery, and pews from the late 19th century that were installed in 1934. The altar and reredos, designed by Joseph Hansom Jnr in 1870, are elaborately crafted from stone with polished marble columns.
