Description
This barn, located approximately 50 metres north-east of Sykes Hill Farmhouse, dates from the mid-18th century. It is constructed from coursed squared gritstone and features a graduated stone slate roof. The barn has four bays, with an original aisle present in bays three and four. Notable architectural details include quoins, a cart entrance with double doors, quoined jambs, and a wooden lintel in bay two, as well as a byre or stable entrance leading into the outshut of the aisle in bay four. The quoins of the right jamb are tied into the barn corner. A lean-to addition in bay one is not of special interest. On the right return, there is a square mucking-out door at the centre of the main gable and a four-pane window that lights the aisle. The barn features putlog or vent holes arranged in three rows, some of which are blocked. The gable has shaped kneelers and copings. Inside, there are three queen-strut trusses with diagonal braces, with the truss between bays three and four supported by an aisle post with straight braces.
