Description

This is a late 17th- to early 18th-century barn with an attached outbuilding, altered in the 20th century. The barn is constructed of coursed squared gritstone, with a corrugated asbestos roof. A smaller outbuilding is attached to the right (east) gable end, and has a roof of graduated stone slates. The barn has four bays, and the outbuilding has two. The barn has a plinth and quoins, with quoined jambs to the openings. The cart entrance is in the first bay, and the lintel is missing. There are a byre door to the left and two further doors to the right, all with large lintels. The quoins to the outer doors also serve as corner quoins to the building. The rear of the barn, facing the road, has a threshing door similar to the byre doors, and slit vents. A pitching door is located in the right return gable. Inside the barn, three principal rafter trusses and some original purlins remain, incorporating several reused timbers. The outbuilding has a doorway corresponding to the barn’s layout, and its roof structure has been renewed. This barn is a rare survival of a small building of this date. The removal of the cart entrance lintel likely took place in the later 19th century to allow access for larger farm machinery.
