Description

The Brandsby Royal Observer Corps monitoring post is a monitoring facility built in 1964, following the standard design established by the Air Ministry Works Department in 1956. Constructed from reinforced concrete and covered with compacted earth, the exterior resembles a rectangular, flat-topped mound of grass. It features a raised entrance hatch at the southwest end and a smaller raised air vent at the northeast end. Between these openings, two metal pipes extend from the mound, serving as mountings for monitoring equipment. The pipe nearest the hatch is for the probe of the Fixed Survey Meter, which measures radiation, while the other is for the baffle plates of the Bomb Power Indicator. Additionally, the mounting for the Ground Zero Indicator, a pinhole camera device used to detect the direction and altitude of nuclear explosions, is located next to the entrance hatch.

Inside, the entrance leads to a 4.6-meter deep ladder-shaft that includes a drainage sump at its base and a hand-operated pump. This shaft provides access to a small closet containing a chemical toilet and to the monitoring room, which measures 4.6 meters by 2.3 meters. The floor of the monitoring room is covered with rubber material, originally from a National Coal Board conveyor belt, while the walls and ceiling are finished with polystyrene tiles. Original fixtures in the room include shelving, a desk, and a cupboard. The air intake vent still has its original mesh screen, designed to filter out radioactive dust particles.
