Description
Springfield House is a house dating from the early to mid 19th century, with later additions from the late 19th century. It is constructed of sandstone ashlar with stone dressings and has a graduated Welsh slate roof. The building has two storeys and an attic, featuring three main bays, a lower single bay, and a two-storey addition to the west. The exterior is characterized by rusticated quoins and a plinth.
There are steps leading up to a central double leaf raised and fielded panelled door, which is topped by a traceried overlight and set within a porch that has pilasters on either side, square piers at the front, an entablature, and a blocking course above. On either side of the door, there are 16-pane sash windows in shouldered architraves with panelled aprons below. Above these, three smaller sashes are set in architraves with moulded sills. The building features an eaves band, wide overhanging eaves, and a hipped roof with a late 19th-century gabled central dormer and two corniced ridge stacks.
The rear elevation mirrors the front, but has a lengthened central sash window on the first floor to illuminate the stairs. The addition to the west also has sash windows in similar architraves and a hipped roof. Inside, there is a fine open well staircase with a wreathed and ramped mahogany handrail, bulb on vase balusters, and scrolled cheekpieces. The hall features an original ceiling rose and paving. The rear west room has a reeded fireplace with corner paterae, and similar fireplaces can be found on the first floor. Some rooms have late 19th-century gas fittings, and throughout the house, there are four-panel doors and reeded cornices.
