Description
This building, located on the west side of the former goods yard of Pickering Railway Station, is a retort house for coal gas, constructed around 1847, primarily to provide lighting for the station. It is a single-storey structure made of ashlar stone, raised on a platform. The building features a frieze, a moulded cornice, and a blocking course. It has a low-pitched gable end with a slate roof that was added later, along with weatherboarding on the gable ends, which rests on the blocking course.
The west front of the building has three semi-circular arched recesses. The left recess is fully occupied by double doors, while the other two contain semi-circular arched windows, with the lower halves functioning as hatches and featuring close-set glazing bars. A moulded string course runs across at the impost level. Both the north and south ends of the building have similar arched entries.
This building, along with others to the west and east of the former goods yard, forms a group with Pickering Railway Station and Park Street.
