Description
The Former Temperance Hall is an early 19th-century building that was originally a Methodist Chapel and later served as the earliest cinema, with the projection box still in place during the survey. The building is constructed of stone and has two storeys. The gable end features scrolled pediment terminals and a carved circular window above a string course. The upper floor has two hung sash windows with glazing bars and keystones. The ground floor includes a single hung sash window with glazing bars and a keystone, along with a doorway that has a tall rectangular fanlight and a double door made of four panels. The Bridge Street elevation displays three windows, one of which is covered by a hoist cover, while the other two are hung sashes with glazing bars and keystones above the lintels. The ground floor has two windows, one of which has been replaced by a plain shop window, and a panelled inset door with a rectangular fanlight and keystone. There are later one-storey outbuildings attached to the side, and alterations were underway at the time of the survey in August 1974. The Former Temperance Hall, along with Nos 1 and 2 and the premises formerly occupied by John Hague, forms a group with the Rose Inn and Nos 5 to 8, as well as the Masonic Hall.
