Description
Quaker Cottage is a Friends’ Meeting House, later converted into a private house, built in 1704 and restored and extended around 1980. The structure is constructed from coursed squared gritstone with a graduated grey slate roof. It is a single-story building with attics, and has three bays. Quoins are present. The central entrance features a 20th-century glazed door with chamfered quoined jambs and lintel bearing the inscription "1704 AD". Recessed chamfered mullion windows are positioned to the left (three lights) and to the right (four lights). The right return showcases a three-light mullion window illuminating the attic. The building has bulbous kneelers and missing copings. 20th-century alterations include a large window on the left return and a single-storey rear extension. A 19th-century photograph taken by the current occupant demonstrates that the original roof was thatched. The meeting house was subsequently occupied by Primitive Methodists, who deserted it around 1880. A description from 1900 notes the house was then ‘in ruins’, with sunken grave mounds.
