Description

Sundial Farmhouse and the attached barn are located on the north side of Askwith West Lane. The farmhouse dates back to 1681, with alterations made in the mid-18th century, while the barn was built in the late 18th century. The buildings are constructed from coursed squared gritstone and feature graduated stone slate roofs.

The farmhouse is two storeys high and consists of three bays, likely following an end-lobby-entry plan. It has quoins and a four-panel door on the right, with long and short quoined jambs and a cambered arch above the lintel. The ground-floor windows on the left and in the centre are paired 16-pane sashes set in stone surrounds. On the first floor, the left window is a slightly recessed three-light chamfered mullion window, where the left mullion has been removed to accommodate a 16-pane sash. The centre window is similar but has a six-pane sash, while the far-right window is an oval 9-pane window with the inscription "RS" on the lintel. To the left of this window is a rectangular sundial with numerals and the inscription "RS 1681" highlighted in white. The farmhouse has end stacks.

The barn, which consists of three bays, projects forward from the farmhouse. It also features quoins and has central double board doors with quoined jambs and a cambered arch that includes a slightly projecting keystone. The first bay, which is now part of the house, has 20th-century windows in plain surrounds on both the ground floor and first floor. The third bay has three tiers of three slit vents and gable coping on the right. The interior of the farmhouse was not inspected during the resurvey.
