Description
Nos 2 and 3 East Road is a coach house and entrance to a yard behind No 84 High Street, now serving as two shops and workshops. It dates from the mid to late 18th century and has undergone later alterations. The building is constructed of brick in Flemish bond, with some ashlar dressings and part rendered, topped with a 20th-century pantile roof. It is three storeys tall in the central bay, which slightly projects, and two storeys in the flanking bays, arranged in a 2:1:2 bay configuration.
The central bay features a carriage arch made of painted ashlar, with chamfered banded rustication on the jambs, impost bands, and an archivolt that includes a tripartite keystone. There is a dentil course at the eaves level, above which rises a rendered turret that is splayed at the base. This turret has a 9-pane unequally-hung sash window below a band, topped by a Diocletian window and a moulded pediment on the gable.
The flanking bays each have a part-glazed door with a 2-pane overlight on the inner side at ground level, alongside a 16-pane sash window. On the first floor, there are two 9-pane unevenly-hung sash windows with ashlar sills and flat arches, and the eaves are also dentilled. The overall roof is hipped, with an end eaves stack and an additional stack on the rear of the turret.
At the rear, the central bay displays unpainted ashlar banded rustication on the jambs of the arch and ashlar quoins above the impost band. The left return features a wall of cobbled panels between brick bands. Access to the upper floors is provided through doors inside the arch. Although the yard side may have originally been the front, it is now obscured by later buildings that are not of special interest.
