Description

The Bay Horse Inn and Orchard House are a public house and house, dating back to the 17th century and significantly altered and refaced in 1784. The building is constructed of hammer-dressed stone with a stone slate roof. The front has two storeys and four windows, all 3-light stepped square mullion windows. The doorways are simple, although the doorway to Orchard House has a small open pediment above it. The doorway to the Bay Horse Inn is now partially hidden by a modern addition, but bears the inscription "1784 R Harper" above it. A section of the rear wall of Orchard House features two double-chamfered stone mullion windows, one light on the first floor and two lights on the ground floor, the ground-floor windows possessing an ovolo moulding. A hoodmould is present on the ground floor. A stone above a doorway is inscribed with "ROBERT HARPER" and a date, traditionally believed to be 1659. There are three chimneys. Inside Orchard House, the roof consists of two large king-post trusses with stop-chamfered purlins, three heavily pegged intermediate collars, all braced to the ridge.
