Description
Rock Castle is a farmhouse, now divided into two, built around 1793, likely by John Foss of Richmond. It features coursed sandstone and an artificial stone slate roof, with a U-shaped plan and two storeys, arranged in a 1:2:1 bay configuration. The building has quoins at the ends and on the central two bays, which project slightly. To the right of the first bay, there is a door with two vertical panels and an overlight above. The sash windows have glazing bars, projecting sills, and deep lintels. The central bays are under a gable that includes a blind lunette window, painted to resemble radial glazing bars, set in an ashlar surround. The ends and central gable have shaped kneelers and ashlar coping. There are stacks at the ends and a corniced stack on the ridge of the central gable. Added ranges to the left and rear right are not of special interest. A house to the right has an entry in the right return of its extension. The date of construction is noted in a manuscript account of Gilling recorded by John Shaw in 1867.
