Description

The Church of England School and School House, dated 1847, is a school and master's house located on the west side of Gilling High Street. The building is constructed of coursed rubble with Welsh slate roofs and features an irregular cruciform plan. The single-storey school has a two-storey house situated behind it.

The school section consists of four bays with a central projecting gabled bay. The right side includes a lower range with quoins, featuring a board door in an ashlar surround, a double-chamfered single-light window to its right, and two double-chamfered mullion windows. The main range has three bays, each with a three-light mullion and transom window. The central window displays raised numerals indicating the date and has a vent in the gable, with single-light windows in the left and right returns of the projection. The structure is adorned with shaped kneelers, ashlar coping, and corniced ashlar end stacks, along with part of a weather-vane on the ridge.

On the left side, there is a lower bay with a kneelered and coped left gable, which features a board door in a double-chamfered quoined surround and a double-chamfered single-light window. The left return of the rear range, which is the School House, has a central board door in a double-chamfered quoined surround, flanked by double-chamfered cross windows on each floor, along with shaped kneelers, ashlar coping, and corniced end stacks.
