Description
The Old Vicarage is a disused priests' house or vicarage located on Chapel Street in Tadcaster West. Originally built in the late 13th century, it was rebuilt around 1500 and has undergone alterations and additions in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of coursed limestone with ashlar dressings, and features breeze block and brick infill. It has a slate roof with a single raised coped gable and a stone stack, along with quoins. The structure is two stories tall.
The north-east front has a blocked chamfered doorway that is off-centre, with a single blocked window to the left and a further blocked doorway and window to the right, along with the blocked remains of a 19th-century addition. Above, there is a small off-centre window with two blocked windows to the left and a chamfered eaves band above. To the right, there are three blocked windows. The north-west front features a projecting external stack, a restored round-headed chamfered doorway with a hood mould, and a blocked window above it, as well as a single 19th-century chamfered cross mullion window on each floor set back to the right. The south-west front has a projecting gabled wing on the left, with a tall chamfered window opening on the side wall, a pair of blocked doorways to the right, and three irregularly spaced blocked chamfered window openings above. The south-east gable wall includes a blocked doorway and an upper doorway, along with a brick gable.
Inside, the first floor retains three exposed stud partition walls in the former hall range. The roof in this section features two king post trusses with triple curved braces that are partly infilled. Some arch braces over the former hall are also preserved. The cross wing contains a single truss with arch braces, a saddle, and a king post.
