Description
32 Kirkgate is a house that has been converted into offices, dating from the early 19th century. It is built of pinkish-brown brick in Flemish bond, with ashlar dressings and a Welsh slate roof. The building stands three storeys high and features four bays, two of which are canted. There is an ashlar plinth at the base. The entrance is located in the third bay and consists of a six-fielded panel door beneath an oblong fanlight with a glazing bar, set in a recessed panelled surround. This is framed by a doorcase with fluted Doric columns that support a moulded frieze and cornice. At the end of the building, there is a carriage arch. The windows throughout are four-pane sashes, with those on the ground and first floors having continuous ashlar cill bands and wedge lintels. The eaves feature a double dentilled band, with ashlar coping and end and ridge stacks. The canted bays have separate turret roofs topped with wrought-iron finials. Inside, there is an open-well oak staircase with turned balusters, a cornice with acanthus moulding on the first floor in the fourth bay, and some marble fireplaces. The building is included for its group value.
