Description
The Almshouses, built in 1815, are a group of almshouses located on Church Road in Thornton-in-Craven. They are constructed from squared dressed stone and feature a stone slate roof. The building is single-storey and has an 11-bay symmetrical design. The façade alternates between doors made of six raised and fielded panels and windows with plain stone surrounds, which are sashes with all glazing bars. The ends and the three central bays have rusticated quoins and a pediment. The pediment displays an oval cartouche that reads, "1815. These Almshouses for five poor women were erected and endowed pursuant to the desire of Joseph Smith late of the City of LONDON Banker, a native of this parish out of the residuary estate of Rachel Smith his widow." The building features six stacks.
