Description

Stonegrave House is a late 17th-century house with wings added in 1768. It is constructed of limestone rubble, brought to course, with a pantile roof. The house comprises a central range with cross wings projecting to the street. The main façade has two storeys and five bays, with flanking two-bay wings. A six-fielded-panel double door sits beneath a divided overlight, with consoles carrying a cyma moulded cornice above. This is flanked by fixed windows set beneath flat stone arches; the fixed windows in the second and fourth bays are blind. A six-panel door with a flat stone arch leads to the courtyard from the left bay, while the right bay has two fixed windows resembling those on the street façade, but blind to the street. On the first floor, fixed windows mirror the ground floor arrangement; the second and fourth bays are blind. The left bays have blind windows within stone architraves facing the courtyard, and the right bay features sash windows with glazing bars in stone surrounds. The roof has gable copings and shaped kneelers. End, ridge, and eaves stacks are present. The property is approached by square, chamfered gate posts with pyramidal finials, cast iron gates, and railings to the front. Internally, a tripartite stone arched fireplace can be found in the kitchen, along with a groin vault in the left wing.
