Description
Nos 8 to 12 on Crescent Road are a group of shops built around 1890, likely after the deaths of their planners, George Dawson and J H Hurst. The building is three stories high and features a five-bay range, with three windows in each bay and two windows above the carriage entrance bay at the west end. The roof is slated, and the exterior is made of grit stone ashlar.
Distinctive architectural elements include a cornice topped with urns, string courses at the first and second floor levels, and enriched pilasters for each floor. The second-floor windows are arched and have attached balusters along with a continuous impost band. The first-floor windows are architraved and fitted with sash windows. The ground floor has rusticated pilasters that support an entablature, and the shop front includes recessed entrances. This building is included for its group value with Nos 2 to 24 and the Royal Baths, forming a cohesive architectural ensemble.
