Description
Church Cottage is a house built around 1874, likely designed by William Burges for Lady Mary Vyner's estate. It is constructed of coursed grey gritstone with a grey slate roof and timber fittings. The building is one storey high with attics and features an L-plan layout with two bays. The left bay is set back under a verandah that extends below the eaves of the main roof, supported by moulded brackets. It has a small rectangular window and a board door on the left side. The right bay is advanced and includes a window made up of four rectangular lights, with two smaller lights above. Above this, there is a narrow lancet in the gable, which is adorned with a chamfered band. The eaves are raked, and a large tapering stack with crenellated cresting sits at the center of the ridge. On the left side, there is a bay window with three lights and flanking single lights, topped with a hipped roof. Although the interior was not thoroughly inspected during the resurvey, the ground-floor left room features a tall, narrow segmental-arched stone fireplace. The house is located on the south side of the pathway leading from Skelton village to the Church of Christ the Consoler, giving it the appearance of a lodge. It is included for its group value.
