Description
The barn at Village Farm, located on Main Street in Skelton-on-Ure, dates from the mid to late 18th century. It is constructed from cobbles and limestone rubble arranged in alternate courses, topped with a pantile roof and featuring brick gables. The barn consists of eight bays and has quoins. On the roadside, there are two segmental-arched wagon entrances with quoined jambs and board doors, along with three rows of slit vents.
On the left side, there are three rows of five vents, while the right side includes an inserted stable doorway and window, two rows of slit vents above, a blocked pitching door in the gable, and three tiers of slit vents. Inside, the barn has seven trusses made up of tie-beams supported by internal buttresses, which carry queen struts with outward angled braces supporting a collar. There is also an inserted brick partition at the south end and a loft above.
The barn's large size reflects its role in arable farming, which continued into the 19th century.
