Description
St Helens Chapel is an early 19th-century chapel located on Main Street in Skelton. It is constructed of coursed squared limestone and features a grey slate roof. The building is small and rectangular, consisting of two bays, and has a west porch with a flattened segmental moulded arch, complete with a hoodmould and a trefoil recess above. The west gable displays an ornate window with three pointed lights set in a shallow pointed arch, also featuring a hoodmould, and there is a bellcote above. The east window is similar but larger, and both gables have stone coping and shaped kneelers. Inside, there is a plaque on the east wall commemorating Elizabeth, the wife of Isaac Grakelt, who died in 1828. In the 19th century, the building served as a mortuary, and no furnishings were present at the time of the resurvey.
