Description

The building is a threshing barn and wheel-house, dating from the early to mid-19th century, located approximately 30 metres north-west of the western farmhouse at High Cayton. It is constructed from coursed squared pink-grey gritstone and features a pantile roof with two or three eaves courses of stone slates. The barn has seven bays and a polygonal wheel-house at the rear of bays five and six. Notable architectural features include quoins, a tall segmental-arched cart entrance with an edge-tooled surround on the west side, a byre door to the left with a plain surround, and a square window to the right. There are pitching doors under the eaves in bays two and five. The rear of the barn has a central threshing door and a byre door on the far left. The wheel-house has a hipped roof and rectangular openings under the eaves.

Inside, the original roof structure remains intact, although the wheel-house machinery is missing. The barn contains six queen post trusses. This structure is situated on part of the site of the deserted village of High Cayton and is included for its group value.
