Description
The former school, originally founded in 1659, is housed in a building constructed in 1862, which features a panel listing the names of its subscribers at the end of the porch. The structure is made of coursed, squared rubble with rusticated quoins and includes ashlar blocks that bear the names of the subscribers. The eaves are decorated with boards beneath a graduated slate roof, and there is a belfry with a weather vane at the east end, along with conical metal chimneys. The building is a single tall storey. On the west side, there is a plank door leading into a gabled central porch on the north elevation, flanked by single windows with glazing bars set in stone surrounds that have projecting imposts and a keystone above the semicircular heads. Similar windows are found on the south and west elevations. Additionally, a lower gabled fuel store has been added to the east return. Inside, the entrance to the fuel store features a re-used lintel that is initialled and dated: W.M. (for the founder, Rev. William Morland) 1659.
