Description

A terrace of workers’ housing dating to around 1865, with alterations made in the 20th century. The terrace is constructed of red brick with some ashlar dressings, and has graduated slate and composition tile roofs. It consists of 26 rectangular houses forming the south side of Keith Street. Each house is three storeys high and features a single window to each floor, alongside a doorway to the right. A chamfered plinth and impost string course are present. Later replacement doors have plain overlights beneath segmentally-arched lintels, which have hoodmoulds above. Projecting sills and ashlar springers define segmental brick arches with keystones. A sill band marks the first floor, alongside cambered brick arches (some now replaced by lintels). The second floor also has a sill band and wooden lintels, set within corbelled eaves. Party-wall ridge stacks and an end stack are visible on No. 51. The facades of Nos. 1, 7 and 37 have been re-fronted, resulting in the loss of some original features, but the replacements maintain the original rhythm of the terrace in terms of detailing and window size. No. 7 retains its original front door, plinth, corbelled eaves, and sill bands, as does No. 37, which also retains its impost band. The hoodmould on No. 9 appears to have been removed or made flush with the brickwork.
