Description

The Old School House, now a house, was built in 1841, as indicated by the initials and date "M.H. 1841" on the gable. The building features rendered walls with limestone dressings and a graduated greenslate roof with a stone ridge. It has one end chimney to the left and a central chimney with a round shaft, all designed in the Gothick style. The structure has an irregular plan and consists of two storeys, with a single-storey portion to the left.

The front has two adjacent gables, with the right-hand gabled portion featuring an overhanging upper floor that rests on a massive, roughly dressed limestone lintel supported by two weathered limestone piers. The ground floor has a three-light window, while the upper floor has a four-light window with a hood mould above; both windows have chamfered stone mullions and surrounds with leaded glazing, and the upper window has central lights set one above the other. The left-hand gabled portion is narrower and includes a board door in a stone surround with a four-centred arched head, along with a small casement window above. The single-storey portion to the left has a two-light window with stone mullions. For further details, see notes for The Old School and John F. Curwen's "History of Heversham with Milnthorpe," published by Titus Wilson, Kendal, in 1930.
