Description

The Church of St Peter is a parish church located in Heversham. It dates back to the 12th century, with the south arcade to the nave, the south arch, and the south porch likely from the 14th century. The chancel and north vestry were rebuilt in the early 15th century, while the nave clerestory and south chapel were added or rebuilt in the late 15th century. The north chapel probably dates to the early 16th century. Significant rebuilding and alterations occurred in the early 17th century following a fire. A comprehensive restoration took place in 1868 by architects Paley and Austin, which included the addition of the west tower and the rebuilding of the chancel arch and north arcade.

The church is primarily constructed of limestone rubble with sandstone dressings, while the vestry and the east wall of the chancel are made of coursed sandstone blocks. It features lead roofs and is designed in the Perpendicular style, with Victorian additions and elements of Early English architecture. The structure includes a square three-stage tower with clasping buttresses on the lower stages, a stair turret at the southwest corner, and a small leaded spire. The gabled porch has pointed-arched openings with hood moulds and a heavy oak studded inner door with early medieval ironwork. A shaft of a Celtic cross is located in the porch. The interior consists of a three-bay nave and a two-bay chancel.
