Description
Chestnut House and the attached cottage to the south were originally a school house, purchased for that purpose in 1772. The building was rebuilt and extended in 1824, with the frontage set back from the road, as noted by J.F. Curwen. In the early 20th century, the roof of the cottage was raised and an additional storey was added. The structure features stone rubble walls and a graduated greenslate roof with a stone ridge and three stone chimneys. It has three storeys and four windows: the ground and first floors have sashes with glazing bars and roughly cut voussoirs above the openings, while the second floor has sashes without glazing bars. The house includes a central six-panelled door flanked by reeded pilasters and topped with an entablature. The cottage has a board door and a ground floor window that is offset. Inside the house, there is a 19th-century staircase along with some window surrounds and shutters. This information is referenced in John F. Curwen's "History of Heversham with Milnthorpe," published by Titus Wilson in Kendal in 1930.
