Description
The Memorial Cross, located to the south of the Church of St Peter in Heversham, was erected in 1920 to honor those who lost their lives in the First World War, with an inscription for the Second World War added later. Designed by J.F. Curwen, the cross is made of sandstone and takes the form of a Celtic Cross, inspired by a reconstruction of an old cross that was in the church porch at the time of the survey. The south face of the cross features a list of names along with the inscription: "THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVER MORE 1914-1919," followed by additional names for the 1939-45 war. The north side includes part of an inscription that reads: "TO THE MEMORY OF ALL THOSE WHO AT THE CALL OF KING AND COUNTRY LEFT ALL THAT WAS DEAR TO THEM ... GIVING UP THEIR LIVES THAT OTHERS MIGHT LIVE IN FREEDOM." Further details and a photograph of the original memorial can be found in John F. Curwen's "History of Heversham with Milnthorpe," published by Titus Wilson & Son in Kendal, 1930.
