Description

Ormside Hall and adjoining barns comprise a large house with two distinct main phases of construction and later alterations. The south wing dates to the late 14th and early 15th centuries and is built of large sandstone blocks with quoins. The main hall block was rebuilt in the late 17th century using coursed, squared rubble. Both sections have steeply pitched roofs covered with graduated slate, and stone chimneys. The three-storey south wing features several 14th and 15th century mullioned windows, some of which retain their traceried heads, all set under hoodmoulds with labels; the ground floor windows are largely 20th-century replacements. Inside the wing, an original large ground floor fireplace has been uncovered, and a first-floor room contains a fragmentary plaster frieze with scrollwork decoration and decorative corbels.

The entrance door to the two-storey, four-bay main block has a late 17th century pedimented architrave with a projecting keystone. There is a single window to the left of the door, two to the right, and four to the first floor, all with mullioned two-light openings and varying glazing. A single-storey kitchen outshut to the rear has inserted 20th-century dormers.

A two-storey range of outbuildings adjoins the north end and consists of two phases of construction, both built of coursed, squared rubble. The earlier north wing, featuring 17th-century windows under a graduated slate roof, has a barn attached, the barn having a graduated stone flagged roof with loft doors and large wagon doors. Further details are documented in the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments record.
