9/31 Old Rectory

II

Large house, early C19 with later alterations. Deep plinth of roughly dressed, squared and snecked rubble carries rendered walls. Welsh slate roof with coursed stone end chimneys and 2 late C19 gabled dormers to rear. 2-storey, 3-bay symmetrical front has steps up to central panelled door with rectangular fanlight; single sash to either side and 3 to 1st floor (all 16-pane in stone surrounds). 4 bay rear has bridge across to late C19 door and porch (inserted in original window opening) which replaced entry through cellar; ramp leads down to external walkway which runs around the house below ground level. Internally, stair of oval plan has a spiral curtail with large turned central balluster; square balusters and cut string with carved tread-ends. All original panelled doors survive throughout and their surrounds have a continuous roll-moulding terminating in small gothic bases. Some original fireplaces survive and the ground floor rooms have large section, roll-moulded, cornices.
