Description

Oxenholme Farmhouse and Raysholme are a farmhouse, now divided into two properties, comprising the former north wing (Oxenholme Farmhouse) and the former central and south wing (Raysholme). The building probably dates to the 17th century, with later additions and alterations. The walls are of coursed rubble with quoins on a plinth, some areas being rendered with a wet-dashed finish. The roofs are graduated slate, with projecting eaves and stone ball finials to the ends of the stone ridges. Stone chimneys are set diagonally in the walls.

Oxenholme Farmhouse was extended by one bay to the west, likely in the 18th century. A 20th-century plank door is set within a gabled porch to a single-storey entrance wing (formerly outbuildings) on the north side. The original doorway, with a four-centred head, was uncovered in the east return. There are various 20th-century replacement windows that imitate earlier wood-mullioned and transomed designs. Raysholme has a 19th-century wing added to the south end. A panelled door leads to the central block, sheltered by a graduated slate verandah supported on cast-iron columns. The windows are mainly 3-light wood-mullioned and transomed, possibly dating to the 17th century, and feature decorative leading. Both properties have a wood-mullioned window with two pointed lights to the west gable, and a plank loft door to the east.

Inside Raysholme is a framed 17th-century staircase with a projecting landing, featuring turned balusters, square newels, and a moulded handrail.
