Description
Natland War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921, located in the churchyard of St Mark’s Church on Helm Lane in Natland, Cumbria. It is prominently positioned outside the west tower of the church, facing the western end of the churchyard and is visible from the road. The memorial features a lantern-head stone cross with blank gothic style “windows” on each face, topped by a small lead Latin cross. This cross is set on a slender shaft with four sides and chamfered corners, resting on a small moulded plinth and a three-stepped square base. Bronze tablets bearing the names of those commemorated are set into the wall of the church tower. The plinth includes a dedication in incised lettering that reads: THE WAR/ 1914 – 1919/.
