Description
The wall and gateways to St James Churchyard were built in the mid-19th century. The wall is made of a mix of sandstone and cobble rubble, topped with chamfered coping. One of the gateways, located on the path to Hutton Hall, features dressed Penrith sandstone with engaged columns that support zigzag caps and a round neo-Norman arch. This gateway also displays a pendant coat-of-arms belonging to the Fletcher-Vane family. There is a plain stone gateway opposite the west entrance to the church. The wall encloses the churchyard on all four sides and includes three inscriptions set into it.
